Lectio Divina is a time of praying with Scripture that calls one to study, ponder, listen, pray and even sing and create from God's Word, within the soul.
What is Lectio Devina?
Like our Oak Mountain illustration of the waltz for the Christian life, so Lectio Divina uses the illustration of dance as a way to move through Scripture. This is an ancient discipline of the Church, a way to slow down and allow the Holy Spirit to lead your reading of Scripture.
How Does it Work?
We will meet in a large group setting and hear speaker Nancy Carroll give the passage from Hosea. She will read this several times and you will receive a copy as well. Next, we will break up into smaller groups and process the Scripture according to the following:
Preparation (Silencio): Pause before reading. Close your eyes. Be still. Breathe and pray for God's Spirit to be with you.
Read (Lectio): Listen for the word or phrase that resonates for you. It is helpful to read aloud and actually hear the words. Let yourself be surprised if it is not a word or a phrase you expected. Write down these words before moving to the next reading.
Reflect (Meditatio): Read the passage again slowly. Ask yourself: How is my life touched by this word? Where am I in this story? Use all your five senses and imagination. Write down your thoughts or sketch out your impressions.
Respond (Oratio): Is there an invitation for me to respond in some way? Read the passage again and ask God to make you hear it afresh.
Rest (Contemplatio): Read the passage again. During this reading, release your concerns. Return to a place of rest in God.
Resolve (Incarnatio): How will you live out the Word of God you have just heard? Is there an image or picture from this Scripture that will help you remember it throughout the day? How will you live out what you have received? And if you have completed the exercise and don't feel like you've gotten anything, don't be frustrated. It's not a formula or system to work, but just a different method of engaging in Scripture. Return to "Rest", knowing that the Word of God is powerful, trusting and asking God to make it personal to you over the weeks to come.
What Happens Next?
After the small groups, we'll meet back up again in a large group and discuss what we received in our small group time. You'll be charged to create something over the next month that reflects this powerful time of Scripture reading. You do not have to be creative to participate! Create if you feel called to do so.
