The Westminster School at Oak Mountain

“In Christ Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Colossians 2:3

The Westminster School at Oak Mountain, a ministry of OMPC, serves Christian families throughout the Birmingham area. We currently enroll more than 300 students in grades K-5 through 12. Our aim is to graduate students with knowledge, understanding and wisdom, who are equipped to successfully engage the world in which they live.

First and foremost, we are intentionally Christian in our approach. By this we mean that we do not merely offer Bible in our curriculum, but rather we seek to integrate the gospel of Christ into every thought we think, every word we speak, and everything we do. Whether in our curriculum, on the playground, or simply in day-to-day relationships with one another as faculty, we want the gospel of Christ to be pre-eminent. Another aspect of our model is that we are a covenant school. By this we mean we are a school that partners with Christian families. We believe the primary responsibility for education lies with the parents, and we exist to help them educate their children.

We are also classical. A classical education is a return to the traditional way of education that emphasizes language and literature, taught through the subjects and stages of the Trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric). Modern education has largely fragmented knowledge into categories or subjects that are too distinct from one another. The classical approach emphasizes the unity of truth across all disciplines and furthermore recognizes the Lordship of Christ over all. As Mortimer Adler has said, education is not “…..something externally added to a person, as his clothing and other accouterments….education is an interior transformation of a person’s mind and character.”

While our curriculum and pace is challenging, we are not a school targeting the academically elite. We believe that most students in our demographic, willing to work hard, can be successful.
